Good afternoon Discovery family.
I want to personally thank all of the students and parents who attended the county commissioners meeting last night. As most of you have heard, the meeting did not go the way we wanted. The county commissioners approved the merger plan by a vote of 3-2. The commissioners will now submit the plan to the NC State Board of Education. The state board will then decide to approve or not to approve the plan. As their May meeting agenda is already set, this will probably go on their June agenda. I would encourage all who are willing to reach out to the North Carolina State Board of Education to let them know why Discovery is such a special place and why a merger is not in the best interest of our students without a full comprehensive study that looks at all factors of merging.
As principal of this tremendous institution, I want to assure you that I will be personally reaching out to these individuals and even will request that they visit our outstanding school. I even told our students earlier today that when this falls on the board agenda, we will be making a field trip to Raleigh for anyone who would like to go. I understand firsthand the positive impact our school has on our students, families and community and I will do everything within my power to ensure that the Gryphons are around for a long time.
I also want to put everyone's mind at ease in terms of the timeframe included in this merger plan. Even if the merger is approved by the NC State Board of Education, Discovery High School is guaranteed to be open through 2030. This means that all current students, as well as the incoming freshmen class, will graduate from Discovery.
I know that all of this seems overwhelming, but our top priority remains the same: to educate our students to the best of our ability and most importantly, to ensure they have the skills necessary to be successful in life. This struggle will make each of us stronger in the end and remind us to persevere even when times get tough (Handle Hard Better).
Take care.

Monday, April 20th, is the monthly County Commissioners meeting at 7:00pm. Meetings are held in the Catawba County Justice Center Meeting Room on the 2nd floor. They have announced that they will
vote on the merger plan at that time. The Newton-Conover Education Foundation’s hope is to get the commissioners to pause
and complete a comprehensive study to determine the long-term effects of consolidation. Please plan to attend and help advocate for our district and our Discovery High School!
Monday & Tuesday- Enrichment, Wednesday - Advisory, Thursday - Family, Friday - Community
Good luck to our Envirothon Team as they participate in the state competition on Friday!
We will be hosting a Blood Drive on Friday April 24th. Please sign up to give if you're able. Refer to the attached flyer.
As we are coming to the end of the school year, I would encourage you to reach out to your student's teachers to check on his/her progress. You can also access this on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Encourage your student to finish the school year strong!
As always, if you need anything, please let me know. Take care.
