Good afternoon Discovery family. I hope that everyone has had a wonderful weekend. Below are the announcements for this week.

From our School Board:
Dear Parents and Families,

The Newton-Conover City Board of Education has begun the search for a new Superintendent, and your voice matters in this process.

We invite you to take a few minutes to complete a short survey and share what qualities and priorities you feel are most important for our district’s next leader.

Please complete the survey by September 14.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GDBP5M6

Thank you for your time and for being such an important part of our school community.

This week's Enrichment Schedule: Monday and Tuesday - Enrichment, Wednesday - Advisory, Thursday - Family, and Friday - Park Day.

We will host an Open House on Thursday 5:30-6:30. This will provide parents an opportunity to come and meet their student's teachers.

Friday is Park Day. Students brought home permission slips this past week. These need to be signed and returned in order for students to be able to participate.

We will be participating in a Canned Food Drive starting tomorrow and running through October 10th. Our goal is 1000 cans of food. If we reach that goal, Mr. Whitener will pour a bucket of ice water on himself.

This week's Character Awards can be found at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TRAt7Zp1I884xfqHm8wGYfjwKsjrw300/view?usp=sharing.

I look forward to a wonderful week at DHS. As always, please reach out if there is anything you need. Take care.

As a way to celebrate our staff at DHS for the release of the recent US News and World Report rankings (6th in the state) and the state report card release naming DHS as an A school meeting growth, Mr. Whitener cooked breakfast for all of the staff. All of the staff enjoyed it, but one staff member in particular was surprised when he delivered it to her at NCMS...

Good afternoon Discovery family. We've had two wonderful days to start the 2025-26 school year! Below are a couple of midweek announcements.

I need your help. Safety is a top priority for me and drop off and pick ups are some of the most stressful times for me. We have developed a specific procedure that helps keep our students safe. I ask that parents who drop their students off in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon to please follow them. Car riders should turn onto North Ashe Ave from 20th street. Parents will then turn right into the circle at the office, drop students off there, and students will walk from there to the gym. Parents will then turn left out of the circle to head back down to North Ashe and turn right at the stop sign. This will be the same pattern for dismissal.

I hope everyone has a wonderful evening. Take care.

Good afternoon Discovery family and welcome to the 2025-26 school year. We look forward to welcoming all of you to school tomorrow and are planning on a terrific school year. Below are the announcements for this week.

The schedule for this week can be found at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oy3WrsjjYSbcnxfo2eJJswOExDV0X4Tduii2ZUeeMOo/edit?usp=sharing. All students will report to Advisory in the morning. Advisory groups can be found at https://docs.google.com/document/d/19wsQ4MFdG-Of2_UnDgplRdFRloDPyQUfh6islmpYZgU/edit?usp=sharing.

Students will be given their schedules in Advisory tomorrow. Students may be dropped off at 7:10 in the morning and should report to the gym. School starts promptly at 7:40. Dismissal is at 2:50.

Buses will be the same for returning students. For students coming from NCMS, the bus stop should be the same, but the bus number will be different. Everyone should plan to be at there stop by 7 at the latest. Times will start to be consistent by the end of the week.

Breakfast is free for all students. Interested students should report to the cafeteria when they arrive. Lunch is $2.90 unless a student is receiving free or reduced lunch. Ordering protocol for lunch will be discussed in Advisory tomorrow morning.

The Labor Day holiday is Monday September 1st. There will be no school for students on this day.

Last, but certainly not least the US News and World Report has ranked The Discovery High School as the 6th best high school in the state of NC which puts us in the top 0.7% of all high schools in the state. We are also ranked as the 275th best high school in the nation which puts us in the top 1% of all high schools in the country!! This is due to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students. Let’s shoot to go even higher this school year.

If there's ever anything we can do for you, please let us know. Take care.
