Serve, Set, Spike: DHS First Volleyball Tournament

Story by Sakara Chue and Alexis Vang

This year, Discovery High School starts a new sports tournament, Volleyball Vengeance. In this tournament, there are four teams: The Brain Eaters, The Black Cats, The Pumpkineers, and Hexed Havoc. Each game is played on Fridays throughout October. The first game was played on Friday, October 2nd at 10:35 a.m. between the Black Cats and the Brain Eaters.

Volleyball is very popular within Discovery High School, but it will not replace March Madness. “We have a lot of sophomores and juniors who play volleyball during lunch, and the senate team wanted to try something new and different this year,” said Shane Whitener, Discovery High School’s principal.

To prepare for this tournament, some student players have been practicing their volleyball skills during their free time. “I have been preparing by playing volleyball in the gym,” said Ben Ward, a senior student and a member of the Black Cats team.

Since volleyball is popular in school, many students hope this tournament will continue in the years ahead. “I feel like it brings a lot of people together, allowing us to share moments with new people and each other,” said Calleigh Berry, a sophomore student.

Many DHS student players are competitive and have a special message for their opponents. “My competitors should be afraid,” said Lily Hunsucker, another junior attending DHS and part of the Black Cats team.

As a result of Friday’s game, the scores between the Black Cats and the Brain Eaters were tied, so there will be a rematch this Friday, October 9th, 2026.
