Teacher Feature: Ms. Berry
Story by Aivi Larsen
Ms. Berry is the month-long substitute history teacher here at Discovery High School, and she is absolutely amazing.
Ms. Berry is glad to help out until our new history teacher arrives on October 1st. She likes to be around the students even though she knows teaching history isn’t her strong suit. She is a kind-hearted, hardworking teacher who cares for others and is there for her students to talk to and support. She describes herself as an easygoing mother and grandmother who just loves to enjoy what life offers.
Ms. Berry went to UNC Charlotte and got her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and her master’s degree in education. In the past, Berry was a program specialist for special education for 30 years and was a teacher for one year at UNC Charlotte in the exceptional children’s program. She was also a sub in different places in Catawba County as well as Newton-Conover.
One of the reasons that she became a substitute is her love of education as well as contributing to the community. “I love watching people learn and grow, and I just like kids,” said Ms. Berry. Her favorite part about her job is being with the students.
Ms. Berry believes in a good education and states that even if a student doesn't see the use for particular subjects right now, learning will help them later in life. “Education is important, so do your best and always try to learn, even if others around you are not trying to learn.” Ms. Berry wishes the best for her students and encourages them to study well and work hard.
