Balancing Discovery Academics with Red Devil Athletics
Story by Jessica Tercero-Lopez
Despite the rigorous academic expectations at Discovery High School, a dedicated group of students is stepping up to balance the demanding title of “student-athlete.”
While sports programs are not hosted directly on the Discovery campus, students are given the opportunity to compete across the street at Newton-Conover High School (NCHS). Though many choose to focus solely on academics, several DHS students have joined NCHS rosters this season.
“Even though it’s at Newton-Conover High School, I am still grateful that all of you have the opportunity to join those athletic teams if you choose to do so,” said Principal Whitener.
In the mix of NCHS and DHS teammates, a common question arises: how do these athletes handle the pressure of upcoming games while submitting assignments on time? Balancing due dates and personal responsibilities is no small feat.
“I tend to plan my assignments ahead of time so I won’t be stressed out as game days get closer,” said Gabriella Sanchez-Rodriguez, a former NCHS student.
For some, the challenge isn’t just the schedule—it’s the sport itself. Entering a first season in a brand-new sport brings its own set of nerves.
“It was nerve-wracking; I was nervous about taking a spot in something I’ve never had much experience in before. But it was worth it, especially competing in swim,” stated Clancy Maier.
As the season draws to a close, many of these athletes are already looking toward the future. They aren’t just looking to improve their physical performance, but are also finding ways to sharpen their academic discipline for the seasons to come.
