Discovery High School Collects 1,061 Cans of Food
Story by Colson Whitley
Canned Food Drives are needed at schools to provide food to the less fortunate. Discovery High School exemplifies the need for can drives through its own efforts.
Imagine Dyer, a senior at Discovery High School, brought 12 cans consisting of soup, peas, and beans.
As Imagine puts it, “We should continue doing canned food drives in the future because the students love to participate.”
Another student at Discovery, a sophomore named Giovanni Sanchez-Rangel, brought 48 cans.
Giovanni explained the can drive is vital because, “some people don’t have the luxury of being able to put food on the table that so many of us take for granted.”
Altruism has always been a part of Discovery High School. The principal of DHS, Shane Whitener, explained, “Helping students understand the importance of giving back to the community is very important.”
Principal Whitener promised to take the “Ice Bucket Challenge” if the student body reached their goal of at least 1,000 cans. He delivered on his promise last Friday with the whole school watching.
The food drive was a success, providing much-needed meals to those who are often food-insecure
