For over a decade, Discovery High School has enjoyed a “Park Day” at Southside Park in Newton. Every year the students and teachers have a blast. This year’s Park Day was no different, having multiple activities filled with fun and excitement.
For quite a few, this is their last park day, so it is a bit more meaningful for them than others. “It’s pretty sad that it’s my last park day, but I want to enjoy it to the max,” said senior Stacy Hernandez.
Most students seem to enjoy interacting with each other and making new friends. “Park Day gives the whole school the feel of being connected,” explained sophomore David Friberg. “I really just enjoy the activities, and it’s nice to get the whole school involved,” he continued.
It’s a day where all grade levels get a moment to be together without being separated like parts of their traditional school day. “I feel like the whole day gives students a chance to make better bonds,” said sophomore Johnny Rogers.
The activities that took place on this park day were Ships and Sailors, followed by two games of dodgeball divided by grade level, and finally a game of tag called Assassins. These games inject healthy competition into the Discovery Community. “It gives students a mental reset while getting into the rhythm of the school,” said sophomore Giovanni Sanchez-Rangel.
Amidst the fun physical activities, there was also plenty of time offered for students to unwind and relax, doing things that they enjoy with their friends. “My favorite part of today so far has at least just been chilling in my hammock playing my guitar,” said Jonathan Rogers, a sophomore.
Alongside all the activities and bonding among the students, fundraisers were also held through refreshments offered by the Science Olympiad Team and the Student Senate, offering a variety of drinks, popsicles, chips, and even pizza.
The weather and scenery were perfect for Park Day, and there were plenty of trees to provide shade for those who wanted it. “I think my favorite part is probably just walking around, and just being around nature is pretty cool,” said Ben Ward, a junior. It truly was a beautiful and perfect day, filled with fun and relaxation.
