FRESHMEN ENJOY FRESH START AT DHS

Story by Naomi Carballo

The Class of 2028 is having a great first year at Discovery High School, and many students are enjoying their experience, calling it “interesting” or “wonderful.” With a welcoming environment and plenty of opportunities to grow, freshmen are settling in quickly and making the most of their time at Discovery.

Discovery offers a lot of fun activities and opportunities that other schools might not have. Many freshmen feel they have more freedom, space to express themselves, and a chance to meet others with similar interests. “I love how welcoming the atmosphere is here, and I can be myself without worrying about being judged,” said Esther Urbina Martinez.

In addition to the fun, Discovery also offers challenging courses for students who want to push themselves. Freshmen are required to take two AP classes, and some students, like Zoe Crosson, have found a routine that works for them. “It’s been tough to manage the workload, but honestly, I enjoy staying busy,” Crosson said. The courses aren’t easy, but students are encouraged to ask questions if they need help. “I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help, and teachers are always there to help,” said Grace Robinson.

Freshmen at Discovery have many reasons to love their school. Some are drawn by the challenging curriculum and the unique college prep. Others enjoy the connections they build with teachers and classmates. With smaller class sizes and group activities organized by the student senate, students feel like they’re part of a close-knit community. “I look forward to seeing my friends and teachers,” said Isabella Melillo.

Students are also encouraged to follow the Pepsi Philosophy, along with other Discovery norms. The Pepsi Philosophy is about finishing your work first and treating yourself afterward. Freshmen like Wisdom Young use music to stay focused. “Listening to my favorite music helps me stay motivated, and I look forward to enjoying it after I finish my work,” said Young. Using timers and to-do lists also helps students stay organized and on track.

Discovery is ranked the 8th best school in North Carolina according to U.S. News & World Report, which is one of the reasons many students apply here. Overall, Discovery offers a fantastic high school experience where students can be themselves and focus on their studies without the pressure of judgment. For freshmen, it’s an unforgettable year—learning how the school works, joining clubs, building relationships, and balancing classes and homework makes each student’s experience unique.
