DHS HOSTS TRADITIONAL BBQ FUNDRAISER
Story by Bella DeCoursey
On November 8th, 2024, Discovery High School held its 16th annual BBQ Day fundraiser. The staff and students work together to sell BBQ plates to raise money for the school. This year, students sold over 500 plates and raised $5,700.
Discovery holds 2 annual BBQ day fundraisers, one in the fall and another in the spring. The money raised from this fundraiser benefits the students of Discovery High School. Things like t-shirts, trips, and materials are purchased with the money raised. The BBQ is cooked by one of Discovery’s teachers, Mr. Scronce. A special thanks to Mr. Scronce for cooking the BBQ, and another thanks to former teacher, Mr. Dixon, for donating time and supplies to the BBQ.
The rest of the BBQ assembly is conducted by students and Mrs. Kellogg. Students contribute their time for community service hours by working in assembly lines, assembling plates, and taking delivery orders. “Abby, Aspen, and I have made a tradition out of working the assembly line every year,” said senior Layla Isenhour. A huge thanks to Mrs. Kellogg for organizing the event and being in charge of sales. BBQ would not be successful without the hard work of Discovery students and staff.
The students who are not volunteering enjoy their school day on a modified schedule. Some students are busy volunteering, while others use this opportunity to catch up on work. BBQ day is a great day for comradery, and many students enjoy the day while also taking care of business. “BBQ day has been an important part of Discovery tradition, and my friends and I have made tons of memories through volunteering and just simply enjoying the day,” said senior Reagan Brown.
This November’s BBQ sale was a huge success and would not have been possible without the hard work of Discovery’s students and staff. We thank all who have dedicated their time, and an even bigger thanks to those who purchased BBQ!
