Discovery High School is a small, innovative high school that has served students in and around Catawba County for over a decade. DHS has carved a unique niche in the various schooling options for high school students. Recently, there have been concerns raised by a select group of students and parents as to the commitment of Newton-Conover City Schools to the future of Discovery High School. It is the vision of N-CCS that Discovery will continue to serve students who are drawn to its purpose and approach to personalized learning for years to come.
In early June (over a month before concerns about district commitment to DHS were raised), discussions centered on the messaging and marketing of DHS began to occur and involved representation from the school, district office, and school board. Prior to those discussions, feedback was obtained from staff, students, and parents relative to 3 key questions: 1. What is a DHS student?, 2. What is DHS?, and 3. When you graduate from DHS, what skills and/or talents do you hope we have helped you develop?.
In an effort to separate fact from fiction, a FAQ document has been developed to house questions that have been raised regarding DHS. A similar approach was used throughout the pandemic when concerns were many and speculation abounded. These will be updated as new information is available and/or new questions asked. DHS stakeholders are encouraged to reach out to Mr. Whitener or Dr. Gabriel if they have questions or concerns they would like to have clarified.
